This year’s SAG Awards are the first since members went on strike for 118 days last year and finalized a contract with more than 350 production companies that promised an increase in wages, improved working conditions and protections against the threat of artificial intelligence in performances.
The Life Achievement Award, announced ahead of the ceremony, was given to Barbra Streisand. She received a standing ovation for her acceptance speech, in which she spoke about why she decided to pursue her dreams despite not looking like other movie actresses at the time.
“That make-believe world was much more pleasant than anything I was experiencing. I didn’t like reality,” she said. “ … It’s really a privilege to be part of this profession.”
